Remains of Saxidomus giganteus found in the midden pile of a Giant Pacific Octopus.
Five drill marks (indicated) were found on this shell. None
of them penetrated the inner surface. The octopus probably spent many
frustrating hours in its den drilling these holes, but always tired
too soon and started over in another spot. That shell is thick!
The octopus finally gained access to the clam by chipping the edge of
the shell with its beak (a bite, indicated by 'b').
Feast time at last.
