MAR 110 Scuba Diving:
Offered every fall session, Scuba Diving introduces skills for open water snorkeling and SCUBA diving. The course
emphasizes selection and use of specialized equipment, hyperbaric theory, proper planning, diving rescue
skills, use of recreational dive tables, and first-aid specific to the activity.
Heavy emphasis is placed on hazard assessment and safety issues. This course meets Professional Association of
Diving Instructors (NAUI) standards.
Prerequisites: Swim 4 laps continuously (any style, no time limit.) Tread
water for 10 minutes. Medical waiver needed, as well as mask, snorkel, booties, and fins.
Lab fees cover other gear, books, and pool, but not certification fees. Those wishing certification may need to rent
or purchase additional gear for practical sessions.
MAR 115 Advanced Open Water Scuba Diving:
Offered every spring session, this course continues the development of skills for open water SCUBA diving. Emphasis is placed on dive planning,
risk recognition and management, selection and use of specialized equipment and protective gear, hyperbaric theory, use of recreational
dive tables, and diving technique. This course meets Professional Association of Diving Instructors (NAUI) standards for Advanced Open
Water diving.
Prerequisites: MAR 110, medical waiver, and necessary gear (see below) including a dry suit. Lab fees cover books and pool.
MAR 240 Rescue Diving:
Offered in the spring session, this course continues the development of skills for open water SCUBA diving. Emphasis is placed on dive planning,
risk recognition and management, selection and use of specialized equipment and protective gear, hyperbaric theory, use of recreational
dive tables, and diving technique. This course meets Professional Association of Diving Instructors (NAUI) standards for Advanced Open
Water diving. Sessions take place in the classroom, pool, and open water.
Prerequisites: MAR 115, medical waiver, CPR, first-aid, and dry suit training, and necessary gear (see below). Lab fees cover books and
pool.
MAR 340 Scientific Diving:
Offered alternate (odd) years in Spring Block, this course meets requirements for Scientific Diver under the guidlines of
Alaska Pacific University and the Association for Advancement of Underwater Science. Topics may include data gathering
techniques, collecting common biota, behavior, installation of scientific apparatus, site location and relocation,
organism identification, ecology, tagging, photography, scientific dive planning, appropriate governmental regulations, AAUS scientific
diving regulations, research vessel diving, aquarium diving, and animal handling. A heavy emphasis is placed on dive safety
