The map below shows the movements of resident (green lines) and transient (red lines) whales while they were foraging. Notice that the residents tend to forage in the middle of channels (where the salmon are) while the transients most often hugged the shoreline where seals are found. The tight spiral at the south end of the one red line (bottom center of map) is where a group of transients closed in on and killed a harbor seal. The data shown is from 1995.
