From: David Scheel [mailto:dscheel@alaskapacific.edu] Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 9:01 AM To: Paddy; Jason Douglas Cc: Adele Lauster; Tye Subject: What is active mission time Jason, It also occurs to me on re-reading previous e-mails in the archive that "active" may mean different things to you and to me. The 9-33 "active" mission time I obtained was from a paper where "active" meant "away from home den." That does not _necessarily_ mean moving very fast or very far, although what precisely it does mean is not really known. What is "active" to you? Operating at full power, all moters going all out and all lights ablaze, camera running, computer CPU at 100%? Or motoring along at half-throttle? Turning? "Active" should probably be construed as holding position, making minor movements of one to several meters every ten minutes or so, with occaisional bursts of longer distance movement on the order of 10 to 100 m. During this "active" period, the camera will be running; some power may be used for lights (perhaps about 50% of active time?). In short, we need an analysis of the various parameters used to estimate mission time, and which ones are most critical to get right. THEN we can start to answer the question of "Is 9 h active time enough?" and "How heavy can the sub be?" David p.s. Sorry about earlier e-mail to "Doug" - I saw Douglas and forgot it was your last name.
