Welcome to the intertidal zone! An octopus runs through it in this educational kit for grade school and high school students.

Educators and scientists who have been studying the Giant Octopus in Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet worked together to develop these materials. We hope that you find them fun and easy to use. In every lesson, you will find an octopus or giant squid. We have included lessons for K-2, 3-6, and High School, with many of the activities crossing age boundaries.

Many thanks to the villages of Tatitlek, Chenega Bay, and Port Graham for their assistance with our octopus studies.

Octopus Project

*Science of the Sound is a community-based science education program, created by a partnership between the Prince William Sound Science Center, U. S. Forest Service, Prince William Sound Community College, and Mt. Eccles Elementary School. Science of the Sound emphasizes using experimental techniques and local surroundings to convey basic science and math concepts. The programs' Outreach project visits Tatitlek and Chenega Bay villages to bring students hands-on activites for learning about the local environment and physical sciences. The On Rocky Shores education packet was prepared specifically for the villages that assisted with the Octopus project.
