Handout 1 - Individual

Giant Cephalopods and the Nature of Science.

We all know that biology, chemistry, and physics are sciences while literature and religion are not, but not everyone has considered what the sciences all have in common. This lesson is designed to help you define what is (or is not) scientific, and to consider the values or shortfalls of being scientific.

Briefly answer the following questions. You will discuss your answers afterwards with your group and with the class.

  1. What does a scientist do?

  2. Define science.

  3. How does a scientific explanation or definition differ from one that is not scientific?
